Andrew Michael Spence is a Canadian-American economist and Nobel laureate. He received a Ph.D. in economics in 1972 at Harvard University. From 1972 to 1975，Spence was the Philip H. Knight Professor of Management, Emeritus, and Dean, Emeritus, at the Stanford Graduate School of Business. he was a professor of economics and business administration at Harvard University, chairman of its economics department, and dean of its Faculty of Arts and Sciences.

Spence was elected as a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1983.Then he served as Philip H. Knight Professor and dean of the Stanford Business School in 1990.Together with George A. Akerlof and Joseph E. Stiglitz, Spence is a co-recipient of the 2001 Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences, for their analyses of markets with asymmetric information.In 2017, Lin Chung-geng, Spence et al. "Medium and Long Term Development and Transformation of China's Economy: Reflections and Suggestions from an International Perspective"won the 17th Sun Yefang Economic Science Award.
